What’s the impact on heating oil now the clocks have gone back?
Mon, Oct 27, 2014
Over the weekend the clocks were put back, resulting in an extra hour of sleep for everybody on Sunday but also marking the end of British Summer Time.
By gaining an hour, the evenings will become darker much more quickly and winter will soon start to creep up on us, bringing lower temperatures and the possibility of ice and snow.
With temperatures today as little as 6°C in some parts of the UK, and elsewhere set to drop next week, many people will start to turn on their heating to take the edge off the cold mornings and evenings, and to remain nice and toasty throughout the day.
At this time of year when the temperatures start to drop, there is a surge in heating oil orders; due to people switching on their tanks and noticing they don’t have much fuel left. Due to the influx of orders, we advise that people should act quickly when ordering their heating oil, as there may be delays in them receiving their deliveries.
Centre Tank Services provides The Oil Tank Pack – an essential guide to heating oil. This guide gives information on environmental issues, legal requirements, fuel tank security, and help with picking an oil supplier and how to order, as well as information on how to inspect your tank and its equipment, plus much more.
It’s at this time of year when people also start realising that they have problems with their tank or equipment, such as the tank level gauges. This guide will help you look out for problems and what to do if you come across something that's not quite right. Centre Tank advises that, if you do come across a problem and a repair is needed, you call an OFTEC registered engineer to carry out the service work. CTS have a range of oil tank level gauges and other oil heating tank equipment that can be purchased as replacements, should they be needed.
It is also worth mentioning that at this time of year, when it’s common for people to have their tanks filled up, heating oil thefts are rife. Centre Tank offers advice and tips to both heating oil and other fuel tank users through the Fuel Security Monitor. This guide offers tank owners tips and advice on how to keep your tank secure, such as some of the precautions you can take to prevent your tank from being targeted.
